Why Tinnitus Action exists
Important tinnitus research is already happening. People who want better treatments often want to help, but it can be surprisingly difficult to know where their time, participation, voice, skills or money can actually be useful. Opportunities are scattered and not always easy to discover.
Tinnitus Action exists to make credible, concrete opportunities to contribute easier to find and act on. The long-term aim is to help create the conditions for treatments that reduce or silence tinnitus to advance faster.
What Tinnitus Action does
Tinnitus Action connects people with open, human-reviewed opportunities that fit what they can realistically offer. Each action explains the need, the next step, its destination and important limitations. You decide what to do, then go to the study, organisation or other recipient directly.
That could mean supporting research, exploring participation in a study, sharing a relevant opportunity or contributing a useful skill. Each action has a concrete recipient and need; no individual contribution is presented as a guaranteed research result.

We work alongside researchers, clinical teams, charities and tinnitus organisations, pointing people towards their current needs. Tinnitus Action does not provide medical care or advice. Every action people report completing is added to our shared record — see how we count.

From the founder
I have lived with tinnitus since 2007. That experience made me want a practical way to contribute to progress, rather than only wait for it.
For years, I kept some distance from the tinnitus world because I was afraid of giving tinnitus even more space in my life. I did not want it to become the centre of who I was or how I spent my time.
Over time, I found another way to engage: deliberately, with boundaries and with a purpose. Helping move better treatments closer gave me somewhere constructive to put some of the frustration.
For me, contributing has also restored a sense of agency. Progress is no longer only something I hope will happen. It is something I can help move forward.
I studied nanoscience with a focus on nanobiomedicine, and later biomedical engineering at UC Irvine. My work in needs-driven innovation and social entrepreneurship helped me start Tinnitus Action, but its purpose is to connect people with the research and organisations already doing the work.
I've also spent many years working with peer learning, including publishing research in the field. It taught me something I still believe strongly: people can do remarkable things when they learn from each other, bring what they can, and work towards something that matters together.
That belief is part of what shaped Tinnitus Action. There is enormous knowledge, energy and willingness to help across the tinnitus community and beyond it. The challenge is to help more of that find its way into real opportunities to move things forward — so that individual contributions can add up to something much bigger.
Independence and funding
Tinnitus Action is currently an independent, founder-led initiative funded by Johan Fredriksson. It is not a registered company or charity and does not claim institutional endorsement.
Organisations cannot pay for placement. Participation is free. Tinnitus Action does not process donations or take a cut; financial contributions are made through the recipient's own donation route. Future funding, affiliations and potential conflicts of interest will be disclosed.
